There are four absolutely essential things to own. These four things are kettlebells, barbells, bumper plates, and dumbbells. You will absolutely need them whether training on your own, or if you are outfitting a box. Hex dumbbells are easy to stack and use, and the Body Solid dumbbell sets are a great option for people who need a lot of dumbbells. The Body Solid dumbbells are made with solid cast iron. A unique pin mechanism makes it so the heads will never come off, very similar to the York hex dumbbells.
This is our go to option for those of you who want a set of very durable dumbbells, and for boxes out there who need a wide array of dumbbells for different level clients. Buy either individual ones or the sets to save the most money.

- We can’t support these for boxes/gyms because of the warning placed on them because of the chemicals they use. However, for a single male, these are a good option.
Cap Barbell Dumbbells
We really like this 40 lb Cap Barbell Dumbbell Set. In fact, I liked it enough that it’s the set I bought for myself. There’s no need to spend a fortune on dumbbells since they really only need to function as heavy things you put in your hands.
The only other considerations are whether they’re adjustable and safe to use. These dumbbells are both. They have screw off ends which can allow you to quickly add or subtract cheap weight plates. Even better, the ends ‘screw’ off, rather than slide off, which makes it so they won’t slide off.
This set comes with 40lbs but you can easily buy more plates to make them as heavy as you want. Definitely our go-to option for those of you with a garage style gym.

Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells
We like these because of the massive convenience they provide. With the turn of the dial you can choose dozens of different weights. There are two different options for Bowflex dumbbells. The Bowflex Dumbbells 1090 go from 10 pounds to 90 pounds with 5 pound increments. The Bowflex Dumbbells 552
go from 5lbs to 52.5lbs, with 2.5lb increments to 25lbs and 5lb increments from there. So, if you’re a stronger guy, grab the 90lb dumbbells but if you just starting out, go with the 52.5lb dumbbell. This is a great option for those of you who don’t want a dozen different dumbbells. However, the question of durability comes into play for intense Crossfit workouts. Keep that in mind when balancing the question of whether you should grab the individual dumbbells above or these adjustable dumbbells.

A Dumbbell Set – Worth it?
There are a few things that I spend money on, and a dumbbell set is worth it. A dumbbell set, a high quality barbell, high quality bumper plates, and a handful of kettlebells. After you acquire these items, then you can continue to expand to a GHD, squat rack, and so forth. The question is, do you need a dumbbell set or a pair of adjustable dumbbells? We recommend the dumbbell set for those of you who workout with a few people, but for those of you who workout alone, grab the adjustable pair or a few of dumbbells that suit your workouts.
